Baptism

Nairobi
This evening my city
Is sun drenched grey
The election fervour
Washed off its face
Faces of aspirants
Baptized

Today the thirsty earth
Drinks greedily to quench
Then to share with roots
Drains to gutters rivers
Hoping to be one with the
Sea of Baptism
One drop joins the next
Rivulets in my window
Cars ahead blink in amber
The sound of rain on cars
Wipers numb in motion
Ready to baptize

Umbrellas unfurl and drip
Humans dash for shelter
Shoes squelch and slip
The wind chill creeps
Down the collar spine
Ready to Baptise

And can you Baptise
The hearts of men and
Cleanse them of greed
Give back to my city
What has been robbed?
Just by being baptized?
